It was his own insecurities, his own fears that lead former boy band singer, and now international sensation, Ricky Martin to bully the very people he now seeks to protect and fight for their rigths… the people he identifies with. Martin came out as a gay man in 2010.

In an interview with GQ Australia, the Puerto Rican singer confessed to once bullying other homosexuals and says felt ashamed of gays.

“I was very angry, very rebellious,” he says in the October issue of GQ Australia about being sexually confused when growing up in San Juan, Puerto Rico. “I used to look at gay men and think ‘I’m not like that; I don’t want to be like that. That’s not me.’ I was ashamed.”

The “Cup of Life” singer said it was a combination of fear and fear of criticism and of being different from everything he had grown up with that caused him to “take his anger on those around him.”

“When you’re told you’re wrong by everyone, from society, from your faith – – my self-esteem was crushed. I took my anger out on those around me”, he said in the same interview. “I look back now and realize I would bully people who I knew were gay. I internalized homophobia. To realize that was confronting to me. I wanted to get away from that.”
